A Valentine Rescue

I got an email from Mari (foster mom for Maggie & Millie) about a rescue happening today by A Forever Home Rescue Foundation. Mari says this about them:

This is a very reputable rescue embarking on a needed rescue effort that can bankrupt a rescue. But, this is a desperate situation and they are stepping up. Thank goodness. Please support them as much as you can and crosspost this widely.

Here are the details of the rescue:

A Forever Home Rescue Foundation (www.aforeverhome.org) is rescuing 50 small dogs (Maltese) this weekend.  This just came up a few hours ago and we are mobilizing right now to get these dogs.  I will be leaving tomorrow at 6:00 am to go get them in one of our vans.  I will be back in Virginia tomorrow night.

You rarely see me ask for donations for the rescue I volunteer with, but this is an exception.  We just rescued a bunch of dogs from a backyard breeder in Virginia that will cost us tens of thousands of dollars.  Normally, the new rescue effort wouldn't be a problem, but coming right behind another expensive rescue, it is necessary for us to reach out and ask for donations.

If you can help, please visit www.aforeverhome.org and donate online or send a check to:
A Forever Home Rescue Foundation, PO Box 222801, Chantilly, VA  20153.  Please mark your donation "Valentine Maltese".

Unfortunately, we cannot identify where or who the dogs are coming from right now.  It would jeopardize the rescue effort.  As a matter of fact, it would shut it down and the dogs would be killed at a shelter.

If you are able to donate, please do so asap.

Bingo & Tabby

When I first got her, Bingo wasn't one to follow me around. Now, she's near me wherever I am. Here she is on her bed under my craft table in my office:

Tabby was driving me crazy. I moved my house plants in front of the window in my office for the winter, and he kept crawling into them. *sigh*  What I realized was that it wasn't the plants he was enthralled with; he wanted to be able to look out the window. So I set 2 boxes up in front of the window, where he is now happily planted for much of the day.
Zzzzz . . . .
If not on her bed in my office, Bingo is on her bed just outside:
Zzzzz . . . .
 Outside on our walk:
Hullo.
She's usually pretty good about now wrapping the leash around the trees!
Bingo sees something & has that focused faraway look:
Furrowed brow.  Whatcha lookin' at, Bingo?
 This:
The neighbors across the street have a new boxer, not very old. I've never seen him off the lead and I don't think he goes into the house. Mail Gal Tessa stopped by & gave him some treats.
In the meantime, on our way down the driveway to the house:
*sniff*
Whatcha lookin' at, Bingo?
Tabby on his way back.
Tabby heading back in.
Another day, another walk:
In the back yard, Tabby & Bingo.

Overlooking the lake.

Paw lift.
Tabby scratches on a branch, blending in with all the winter browns.

Whatcha lookin' at, Bingo?

Hullo.

Straining to sniff something, & I'm not letting her lead me around all those little twiggy trees!

Hullo.
So that was our week. Normal and quiet. No running off!  All is well.  :-)

Bingo on Monday

Well, it's been quite a week!  I was on the phone with one of my radio guys and the UPS guy was knocking at the door. So of course, Bingo started barking. Radio Guy said, "Do you have a chow?" I said she was a black lab mixed with something that had a curly tail. He said she sounded just like his chow that he'd had for 11 years. I said that she has a black polka-dot on the underside of her tongue. And then I asked, "Do chows have dew claws on their hind legs?" He said that his dog didn't, but she came from a litter where 2 of her siblings did. Ah-HA!

Bingo's dew claws on her hind legs.
Chows are very smart dogs and can do tricks. Well, that's Bingo!  I read a story of a chow that liked to climb out the bathroom window onto the roof

Bingo and I take a walk around noon-ish. We were walking up the driveway when she spied the mail truck. She started wagging her tail. She knows the truck and she knows that our mail carrier, Tessa, will have a treat for her!  Well, it wasn't Tessa that day, it was a substitute. But Bingo got her treat! A coupla days later, Tessa came up the driveway with a package.

Everybody loves Bingo!

Bingo is sniffing out food! Gluten Free goodies! Thanks, Joy!
So the next part of our week doesn't have any photos to go with it. I think this post has the fewest pix ever--and none of Tabby Bobcat!  Anyway, I popped over to Neighbor-Friend Rita's on Saturday night. Rita says she's Bingo's other mommy. We had a vizzie for about half an hour and then I let Bingo out the door to go to the car. I'd forgotten her leash and had thought, "Meh. It's door-to-door. I don't really need it." Ha! She took off  where she blended into the black of the night. I called & called. Nothing. It had snowed just a bit so that I could see her footprints in the grass, but they ended on the driveway.

So I got into my car and slowly drove down the road, calling her name. I got all the way home. It's about a mile between me & Rita. I called John Morgan, trying not to panic. He always says the right thing:

"No dog that well-loved runs away and doesn't come back. She'll either come back to Rita's or find her way home."

I felt a bit better, but was concerned about her being on the road or hit by a car. Or stuck out in the cold all night because it's been bitterly cold.  It was 9:15 by this time. John suggested I start knocking on doors. So I grabbed a flash light and headed out on foot.  I walked along the road calling out "Bingo!" and making noises with her treat bag.  I knocked at every house with lights on or that had the flickering blue light of a TV. I met more neighbors in that time than I have since I've lived here a year & a half and I gave them all my card. Half-way to Rita's, I met a lovely lady named Vicki who invited me in (it was freezing)! She was so kind, and when I started telling her about Bingo I started to get teary, and she just hugged me and said, "It's going to be okay." So with new resolve, I set back out and made my way up to Rita's, stopping at a few more houses. I kept visualizing that when I would get to Rita's, she would tell me that Bingo had just gotten back. Or that she would call me and say, "Bingo's back." As I got to Rita's front steps,  I called out, "Bingo!" And out of the darkness she came running up to me. It was 10:30p and it had been an emotional 2 hours. She was her happy self, having gone who-knows-where.

I'm grateful for all the kindness from my neighbors, many with dogs of their own. I'm grateful for John telling me to start walking and knocking. And I'm so grateful for Bingo. She just wanted to go on an adventure, I guess. Happy that she's back home.  :-)

Seinfeld Ketchup Episode

I was talking to one of my radio guys on his cell this a.m. & he couldn't put me on speaker because it had ketchup on it from when his wife put ketchup in the cup holder of his car. As he's walking into the GM's office, this was the exchange:

Radio Guy: Who the hell puts ketchup in a cup holder?
GM: Your wife.
Hahahahaha

So I wrote this for him:

Seinfeld Ketchup Episode
Scene 1, in Jerry's apartment:

Jerry in apartment on cell phone with George: I'm waiting for Kramer to go pick up his car. Hang on George, let me put you on speaker. [looks at phone] What is THIS?
George: What?
Jerry: It looks like ketchup.
George: Is it ketchup or catsup? I never know the difference.
Jerry: How did I get ketchup on my phone?
[Enter Kramer]  Hey. You ready?
Jerry: OK, George. Kramer's here. I'll talk to you later.

Scene 2, in car:
Kramer: Can we go thru the drive thru again on our way?
Jerry: Can't I drop you off & then you go?
Kramer: But I've already got my ketchup in here.
Jerry: Well, take it with you.
Kramer: Well, I can't Jerry. It's already in the cup holder.
Jerry: In the cup holder? Who puts ketchup in the cup holder?!
Kramer: Well where else was I supposed to put it? Cup holders are for drinks and food, Jerry. Everyone knows that.
Jerry: Kramerrrrrr.  It's where I put my phone!  Ohhhh....That's why I have ketchup on my phone!
[End scene]

Don't tell your wife I turned her into Kramer.  ;-)

Snow Bunny Bingo

It has been cold-cold-cold this week and we had snow twice!  Thursday morning, melted by afternoon & snow on Friday afternoon, almost all melted Saturday afternoon. So I got a few snowy pix.  Also, Bingo got a vizzie with her doggie friends Dana & Roy at Neighbor-friend Rita's.

Dana & Bingo at the door when I came to pick up Bingo.

Bye-bye, Dana!
 Snowy sunrise on Saturday morning:

Tabby Bobcat loathes the snow!
Dipping his toes into the snow.

One of my tulip poplar trees.

Snowy paw lift.

Back down the drive way.

Down to the lake:

The lake is frozen over.

Bingo loves digging thru the snow. And then comes the sound of a loud meowing, that sounds like MOW (rhymes with COW):
MOW . . . MOW . . . MOW

Snowy nose.  :-)

Tabby comes toward me.

Digging in the snow.

Bingo hears dogs barking.

Tabby leaving back toward the house.

Hullo.

Saturday afternoon walk:

Snow is gone in most places.

The lake is melting.

Snowy Bingo paw print.

Digging into the snowy leaves.

Hullo.

More digging.

Burying her face in the leaves.

On a warming up Saturday afternoon.  :-)
