Ricky Gervais: Healing With Humour

I adore Ricky Gervais. He is smart and funny and an animal lover. He's also a comedian, so I suppose some people don't take him seriously--or worse, they take him seriously when he's joking. I recently watched an interview of him on a show with Pamela Anderson. The judgey part of me was annoyed with the host's lack of sensory acuity as well as:

Follow-up question?  What's that?

I'm sure this comes from working for a former talk-show host--who when he reads this, will point out that this is a Squirrel Moment. But I digress . . .

I was struck by the genuine interaction between Ricky and Pamela. She reveals that she had a stalker and Ricky shows her the absurd humour in it. She's describing the event and he asks her questions (pattern interrupt) and then says something funny (re-frame) and she laughs (anchor), which changes her association to the event. I'm guessing that after that interaction with him, she couldn't think of it without thinking of his hilarious observations. He's a master NLPer/hypnotist without knowing it!

I think it's the best thing that could have happened to her. Healing doesn't have to be difficult, traumatic, or take a long time.  In this case, laughter was the best medicine.

You can jump to segment HERE or watch the whole interview here:

Carpool Karaoke Fantasy

I really love James Corden and his Carpool Karaoke is brilliant. However, while I appreciate the general idea of Carpool Karaoke, the pop stars who appear on it, are . . . pop-stars.  Apart from wrapping Christmas prezzies in Justin Bieber paper as a joke, I couldn't begin to name or fake-hum along with one of his songs, let alone getting stuck in a car for a medley. Fresh Hell, anyone? I didn't even watch the Mariah Carey one because, honestly?  If she hit one of those screech-owly high notes?  Just the thought makes my teeth hurt.

So here's my fantasy:  Carpool Karaoke hosted by Dom Joly singing to The Cure. And James Corden would be in the way back not singing along because he wouldn't know 100 Years or 3 Imaginary Boys. And then Friday I'm in Love would come on and James would be all gothed-out and singing along because this would be the song he'd know. But Robert Smith would not sing along, because it wouldn't be Friday. Therefore he would not be in love.

Speaking of Friday, I'm in Love . . . here you go, on Monday.  Sorry, Robert.

Ricky Gervais

Mum would have loved this. Wish I'd thought of this for the memorial service. I would have written things like "Stiff upper lip" and "Think of England."

Pinterest is gaying up my feed

I love Pinterest. It's my Mind Palace. Whenever I read an interesting article, I pin it so that I can reference it later if I need to. Or if Brother Atlasta sends me an email with the subject title Benadict Yummysnatch, I can pin it, thus sharing it with my millions dozens of followers.

I'm not sure when it started, but Pinterest began having "Picked for you" posts, based on what I've pinned before. So after I've pinned some brainy-type pins, I'll get some other related, brainy-type "Picked for you" type pins. Or if I've been pinning pix of cute beagles, I'll get some more pins of cute beagles. You get the idea.

Being the Erin Condren fan that I am, I recently started an Erin Condren board for all things planner-related. And then THIS showed up in my feed:
Since this illustration is under "Planner Inspirations" perhaps it's random?  I don't know. I just thought it was really funny.

How to Become Gluten Intolerant

If you're GF or around those who are, this is pretty funny!

Favourite lines:

[Gluten intolerance is the] hottest trend in the new age community since we found out we don't have to eat animals. Gluten is the new animal you don't have to eat.

GF bread: The coagulation of mysterious flours that form a brick with the density of a black hole and the dryness of a desert.

. . . while you sit on top of your moral high ground made of rice flour

[This is] based on medical evidence that's yet to be discovered.

Funny Friday

This put me into a fit of giggles at the stationery store:

Battery operated! How many mistakes are you making that you need batteries? Who is buying this? I can imagine if this existed when I was a kid:

Me: But Muuuuuuum! All the other kids in class have them.
Mum: Well you can just use your rubbers the old-fashioned way!
Brother Atlasta:  [smirk] Yeah, Hal. Use your rubbers the old-fashioned way.
Me: Shut-up!
Dad: Anne! They're called "erasers" in this country!
Mum: Well, I don't know! [to me] Don't say "shut-up" to your brother!
Me: *sigh*  [rolling eyes]

Funny Friday

I have an appreciation for humor. I often say it's the spice of life, but really, it's a major food group. The best is what I think of as "real world" humor; things that happen in daily life that are just funny. Babies laugh an average of 300 times a day; the average adult? 15. Click HERE for a full article on why laughter is important. Seriously.  Putting your humor goggles on doesn't cost a thing, and it makes the world a much more funner place to be. (Yeah, I know, Grammar Nazis). So here's some real world humor: I introduced John Morgan to the wonderful world of quinoa, a v. delicious GF grain. Easy to cook, with a nutty flavor; yummy hot or cold.

John: Key-what?
Me: Keen-wa.
John: Key-wa?
Me: KEEN-WA.

And then John's son saw the mystery grain. And this is what it's called in the House of Morgan:

Keanu: so yummy.
Update: Mum was reading this and said, "Keen-u?"
Me: It's pronounced Kee-ON-u.
Mum: What's a Keanu? Oh, wait. Isn't that someone in the entertainment industry?
Me: Yes, an actor.  [Click HERE.]

Anyway, John sent me that picture & it reminded me of Brother Atlasta's labeling efforts:

In this case, it really is a spice of life.
May today be a FUN & funny Friday for you!  :-) H.

Funny Friday

Saw this and thought of you:

You know who you are.

You know those parents who say, "Don't play with your food?"

Because they're gluten free.

You know how sometimes you find lost things when you look between the sofa cushions? Quarters, a hairbrush or Jimmy Hoffa? I thought I found an old fortune cookie fortune, but upon closer inspection . . .

My message from the Universe.

Funny Friday

You'll have to bear with me. I tend to think that lots of things are funny that other people might not even notice. Or if they do, not think it is funny. So here you go:

This celebratory, commemorative wedding plate, in all its glorious hideousness, made a great wedding gift to a friend who has as wacky a sense of humour as I do. She loved it. If you're married, you may remember that those lovely-perfect-crystal whatnots were a wedding gift, but can you remember who gave them to you? Prolly not. But this. This is unforgettable! As we approach the Bridezilla season, perhaps this will give you a few gifty-ideas. You're welcome.

FUNny

In honour of T-day:

I've just discovered Remi Gaillard on You Tube. His spoof on Saving Private Ryan is hysterical! Mum, you will LOVE his Fake Tour de France where he has a finish line crowd welcome unsuspecting bicyclists at the top of a hill. "Congratulations! You've won the race!" Here's a link to his website with all his videos. Happy Black Friday, everyone! Mum & I are going to have a Chuck Fest today. :-)

A coupla jokes

I've been a bit under the weather this week, laryngitis & whatnot. John told me a joke earlier this week from his days as Chuck Taylor in Wilkes-Barre:

Sports Dude: Coach, I got leprosy.
Coach: Walk it off!

This is Chuck Taylor-worthy from Peter Shankman, founder of HARO.

Woman goes shopping for turkeys at the supermarket, but they're all really small, and she has to feed a whole family. She says to the stockboy, "Do these turkeys get any bigger?" "No, ma'am," he replies. "They're dead."

Hahahaha :-)

Sign

Is it just me or is this funny?

Lemme translate: These pylons mark something that used to be here but isn't anymore. If we didn't inscribe this into stone, you would walk right past and never know. It's not the way it used to be.

Have you ever driven in DC? Stupid circles with the northeast, southeast, blah blah blah directions. Merci Monsieur L'Enfant.

What do YOU get offended by?

Scientists have discovered that bees drink human tears. No kidding. Here's the whole article. I find this fascinating for several reasons. The first being, how did these sciencey-types come up with this idea? They're having a convo after a hard day at the lab, perhaps with beer in hand. "Hey, have you ever wondered if bees drink tears?"

Why yes, Bob. I have. Let's get some crying people together . . . .

So just the idea of it, is pretty funny. But, in addition to reading about the study, is the comments that people have left. They range from v. funny:

You can tell that I'm sad because of the bees in my eyes.

"imbibed tears for 0.5-2.5 min, often singly but occasionally in congregations of 5-7 specimens per eye."

WHO LETS THIS HAPPEN?

to random:

It annoys me that people still used "man" to refer to humans, both women and men.

And then! It becomes a feminist argument about language instead of beer-drinking, I mean, tear-drinking bees. Really; read the comments. And I get it, I really do. We're ignoring an entire gender; my gender specifically. But it's an article about bees. Drinking tears.

Some people are waiting to be offended. You know what's funny? It's easy for me to recognize when other people take things so literally and seriously that they don't have a sense of humour about something. It's funny when it's other people who get their panties in a twist. Until . . .

Someone disses chiropractors. Grrrrr! That's when John will kindly point out that I have a burr in my saddle.

Or a bee in my bonnet. But I'm not sticking around to let it drink my tears. ;-)

P.S. For those of you who will point out the preposition lollygagging at the end of my post title--you know who you are. I am well aware of the rule and remember it everytime I break it. With glee. It's my version of sticking it to the Grammar MAN.

Really?

I know someone who makes a point of buying things that are only American.

This is right up his alley.

Fleamarket Finds

When I was a little girl of 5-ish, we had a go-cart like this one:

I seem to recall Mum backing over it in the driveway.

What can you say about this next . . . er, item?

Eeeewwwww!

And this. This book:

I understand the Idiot's Guide to computers & plumbing & whatever, but really? The Kennedys warrant an Idiot's Guide? [Do you ever want to make it Kenendies when you're writing the plural? No? Just me? OK, then.]

XM Radio Guy Hutton pointed out that the above book is very . . . thin. Hahahaha He said it was funny, but not $3 funny.

What we need

That's right, a little healing:

I have a new-to-me blog to read: The Fail Blog. Real examples of paradox, misspellings, & grammEr mistakes. Hysterical. I found it from my current fave Cakewrecks. Humour is everywhere if you're looking for it, and this is the everyday kind of humour I appreciate. Have a FUNny day. :-)

It's Funny Unless It's Not

Humour is a funny thing. If you have to explain a joke, it's not funny. If a person doesn't have a frame of reference for something, it doesn't have meaning. If it doesn't have meaning, it doesn't count. It gets filtered out by the reticular-activating system of the brain that helps the conscious mind sort through sensory information. I'm writing kinda like Purple Cow Guy today. Anyway, here's my favourite joke:

How many surrealists does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

Fish.
